Dance of the Month for May

Each month our callers take a turn to choose one of their favorite dances to be our "Dance of the Month". The featured dance will be on the program for each of our Sunday dances for one month. This will help all our dancers to become very familiar with the figures, timing and style of that particular dance, and so be able to dance it confidently and well.

Severn Bore

Dance type: Longways Duple minor

This is an Advanced Dance

Fried de Metz Herman was inspired to write this dance when she was staying with friends near the River Severn in England. She happened to wake early around 4am, and on glancing out of her window saw the Severn Bore shining in the moonlight.

The first part of the dance represents the beginning of the Bore when the tide is fighting against the current of the river. The middle section with the leads up and down is the flow of the wave, and the final hey represents the white foam behind the Bore.

Fried began dancing in her native Netherlands at age 15. She lived in New York and wrote hundreds of dances. In 2006, she received the CDSS Lifetime Contribution Award. Fried died in January, 2010.
